AI Visibility Audit for E-commerce: What to Check

A useful AI Visibility audit measures technical readiness, real citations, competitors, sources, and persistence. Use this practical e-commerce checklist.

Also available in: Italiano · Español · Français · Deutsch

An AI Visibility audit for e-commerce checks whether AI systems can find, understand, and use your brand and products in shopping answers. It is not one question typed into ChatGPT, and it is not simply an SEO audit with a new label.

A credible audit combines technical catalog readiness with observations from real AI answers.

1. Define the market and query set

Document the country, language, priority categories, product use cases, price bands, and real competitors. Include informational, comparative, and transactional prompts. The same brand can be visible in one language but absent in another.

2. Check technical readiness

Review the signals that make pages retrievable and interpretable:

  • crawler access and server responses;
  • rendering of primary content;
  • canonicals and hreflang;
  • current sitemap coverage;
  • Product, Offer, Organization, and breadcrumb markup;
  • consistency between markup and visible content;
  • titles, descriptions, images, and alt text;
  • price, currency, availability, and variants.

This layer shows whether the catalog can be used. It does not prove that it is already being cited.

3. Run real queries across engines

Test a stable prompt set independently on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Save the model, date, answer, and sources. Classify every result:

  • cited: a source links to your domain;
  • mentioned: the brand appears without a source;
  • absent: it does not appear;
  • error or unverifiable: no valid observation was produced.

Read Cited vs. Mentioned for why those outcomes cannot be merged into one number.

4. Classify sources and competitors

When your store is absent, separate competing brands from marketplaces, comparison engines, publishers, and other domains owned by the same brand. Connect each genuine competitor to the query and product where it appeared. Our guide to why ChatGPT cites competitors explains how to interpret that gap.

5. Measure persistence

AI answers are variable. Repeat the same queries and track:

  • coverage by engine;
  • citation frequency;
  • continuity over time;
  • new or lost sources;
  • competitors gaining visibility;
  • changes after documented interventions.

Do not assign causality without a coherent timeline. A controlled before-and-after sequence is more useful than a generic improvement claim.

6. Turn findings into actions

Prioritize:

  1. crawler blocks and inaccessible pages;
  2. missing or contradictory product data;
  3. high-value prompts won by a competitor;
  4. content too generic for the use case;
  5. lack of independent corroboration;
  6. unstable outcomes that need monitoring.

Every recommendation should name the page, query, missing signal, and next verification. “Improve GEO” is not actionable; “add verified compatibility details to page X and rerun query Y” is.

Frequently asked questions

Is an SEO audit enough?
No. It is an important foundation, but it does not observe AI answers, cited sources, or competitors.

How many prompts do I need?
It depends on the catalog. A smaller, representative, repeatable set is better than hundreds of generic prompts.

Is this a one-time audit?
No. The first run establishes the baseline; monitoring shows whether visibility changes and whether improvements persist.
