How Ecommerce Brands Appear in Google AI Overviews

How Ecommerce Brands Appear in Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews live in Search, not in ChatGPT and not in GA4. What Search Console’s Generative AI report actually shows, what the API still cannot export, and how to read it next to GEO.

Also available in: Italiano

Appearing in Google AI Overviews is a Search problem. It is not a ChatGPT citation, and it is not a session in GA4’s AI Assistant channel. Teams that mix the three invent a metric that none of the systems actually produce.

This article is the Google-native layer. For chat engines, start from cited vs mentioned. For on-site visits, use how to measure AI traffic in GA4. For the catalog discipline behind both, see GEO vs SEO.

Three surfaces, three ledgers

Three surfaces, three ledgers: Google AI Overviews in Search Console, chat citations outside GSC, and AI sessions in GA4. Mixing them invents a metric none of the systems produce.

SurfaceQuestion it answersWhere you read it
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeDid Google show our URL inside a generative Search result?Search Console → Performance on Search Generative AI Features
Chat / answer enginesDid ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity cite or mention us?Citation checks (Krawfly and similar)
AI trafficDid a clickable AI answer send a session we can attribute?GA4 AI Assistant / referrals

If GSC shows AI Overview impressions and GA4 shows zero AI sessions, that is not a contradiction. Google’s generative Search UI often ends the query on the results page. If ChatGPT cites you and GSC is quiet, that is also expected: different crawlers, different indexes, different products.

What Google actually reports

In June 2026 Google documented a Search Console report for Performance on Search Generative AI Features — impressions, clicks and related breakdowns for AI Overviews and AI Mode. The useful unit is still a page, not a brand slogan.

Read it the same way you read classic Search performance:

  1. Which URLs appear, not only which queries
  2. Which countries and devices carry the impressions
  3. Whether clicks exist, or the overview answers without a visit
  4. Whether two of your URLs split the same query (cannibalization)

That last point is why we consolidated /geo-vs-seo/ and retired the matching blog URL. Two canonicals on one intent split the same Search feature you are trying to earn.

Official context: Search Generative AI reports (Google).

Illustrative Search Console view of Performance on Search Generative AI Features. Example catalog pages, not krawfly.com totals. API export is still UI-only.

Illustrative GSC UI — Generative AI Features, not classic Web Search. The numbers are an example storefront. The API column is the point: this report is still UI-only.

What we can see on krawfly.com today

We pulled a first-party Search Console export for krawfly.com (late August / early September 2026). The Generative AI report is real: homepage and /it/ already show impressions in that UI. The absolute numbers are still small. That is the honest baseline — an early Search surface, not a traffic channel you can forecast from.

Classic Web Search is a different ledger. The same property already collects demand we have not converted: geo vs seo, seo vs geo, shopify geo, llms.txt, and Spanish diferencia entre seo y geo fire hundreds of impressions around positions 40–95. That is a ranking job on /geo-vs-seo/ and /geo-for-shopify/, not an AI Overviews number. Do not merge the two exports.

What the Generative AI export does not replace:

  • It does not tell you whether ChatGPT would cite the same URL
  • It does not show up as chatgpt.com / ai-assistant in GA4
  • It does not prove that publishing llms.txt caused the impressions

Treat it as a third column in the weekly GEO review, next to citation checks and GA4.

What the API still cannot do

This is the operational trap. The report lives in the Search Console UI. As of this writing, the Search Analytics API does not expose a reliable Generative AI filter you can pull into a dashboard the way you pull classic web impressions.

So:

  • Now: connect GSC, look at the UI, export CSV when you need a snapshot, segment by page
  • Not now: assume Krawfly (or any GEO tool) can sync AI Overview impressions via API
  • Later: when Google ships the dimension, the connector can store a daily snapshot per URL

Until then, a CSV in the workspace is more honest than a fake live widget.

What will not get you into AI Overviews

These are useful GEO moves. They are not switches for Google’s generative Search UI:

  • Publishing llms.txtoptional discovery file, not a Google ranking lever
  • A ChatGPT citation screenshot
  • Stuffing “AI Overviews” into a second blog post that repeats GEO vs SEO
  • Counting Direct traffic in GA4 as “AI Overview influence”

What still matters, because it is the same catalog Google and chat engines both have to parse:

  • One clear URL per intent (canonical + internal links)
  • Product and category pages with entity, use-case and comparison context
  • Working Product schema, crawl access, hreflang that matches the live URLs
  • Evidence Google can quote — specs, policies, availability — not slogans

Shopify catalogs should start from the Shopify GEO guide, then check GSC on the product URLs, not only on the marketing site.

How to run the review without lying to the board

  1. Open GSC Generative AI performance → Pages. Screenshot or export.
  2. Open Krawfly (or your citation log) for the same week. Note cited vs mentioned.
  3. Open GA4 Traffic acquisition → AI Assistant. Do not force-fit Overviews into that row.
  4. Write three numbers, labeled as three numbers.
  5. If a money query shows two of your URLs, consolidate before you buy links.

That is enough to start. Digital PR comes after the URL map is clean — not before.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI Overview the same as a Gemini citation? No. AI Overviews are a Google Search UI. A Gemini or ChatGPT answer is a different product, even when Google owns both.

Will this traffic show in GA4 as AI Assistant? Usually no. Google already says AI Overviews / AI Mode are not that channel. See AI traffic in GA4.

Can we automate this in the dashboard today? Not as a live API metric. We can educate, export, and wait for Search Console API support. Building a fake chart from UI-only data would be worse than a CSV.

Should we write more articles targeting “AI Overviews”? Only if the intent is new. A definition of GEO vs SEO already has a pillar. This page owns the GSC / Google Search angle. Do not clone it.
